چکیده
We give a new, elementary, purely analytical development of Descartes’ theorem that a smooth connected surface is a perfect focusing lens if and only if it is a connected subset of the ovoid obtained by revolving a cartesian oval around its axis of symmetry.

The electromagnetic properties of classical vacuum (i.e., empty space) are characterized by its permittivity ǫ0 = 8.854 × 10 −12 F m and permeability μ0 = 4π × 10 −7 H m. In contrast, anti–vacuum has permittivity −ǫ0 and permeability −μ0 [1]. The perfect lens, as conceptualized by Pendry [2], consists of a slab of anti–vacuum sandwiched by two slabs of vacuum. While this perfect lens is an idea...
متن کاملImage formation by bifocal lenses in a trilobite eye?
In this work we report on a unique and ancient type of eye, in which the lower surface of the upper calcite lens units possessed an enigmatic central bulge making the dioptric apparatus similar to a bifocal lens. This eye belonged to the trilobite Dalmanitina socialis, which became extinct several hundred million years ago. As far as we know, image formation by bifocal lenses of this kind did/d...
متن کاملAchieving Perfect Imaging beyond Passive and Active Obstacles by a Transformed Bilayer Lens
A bilayer lens is proposed based on transformation optics. It is shown that Pendry’s perfect lens, perfect bilayer lens made of indefinite media, and the concept of compensated media are well unified under the scope of the proposed bilayer lens. Using this concept, we also demonstrate how one is able to achieve perfect imaging beyond passive objects or active sources which are present in front ...
متن کاملMagnifying perfect lens and superlens design by coordinate transformation
The coordinate transformation technique is applied to the design of perfect lenses and superlenses. In particular, anisotropic metamaterials that magnify two-dimensional planar images beyond the diffraction limit are designed by the use of oblate spheroidal coordinates. The oblate spheroidal perfect lens or superlens can naturally be used in reverse for lithography of planar subwavelength patte...
